WhAt are Food for Life Classes?
Food for Life is an award-winning program, created by the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, that teaches nutrition education and cooking to reduce diet-related diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, and cancer.
Designed by physicians, nurses, and dietitians, Food for Life classes promote
healthful eating based on the latest scientific research.
The Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine is a nonprofit organization that is working to dramatically change the way doctors treat chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, obesity, and cancer. By prioritizing prevention over pills, doctors are empowering patients to take control of their own health.

Healthy Basics: The Power of Your Plate 8/23/2026 3-4 PM (Private Class)
This class will focus on general concepts behind healthful eating habits by providing the knowledge and resources for trying out a new way of eating. The Power Plate is a diagram that illustrates the essential food groups: vegetables, grains, legumes, and fruits. From these groups, you will be able to think about different foods and meals to best promote your health and the health of your family.
Participants will take away knowledge and strategies that will help them to realize savings in the short- and long-term, both in terms of their dollars saved and enhanced quality of life. This class will feature a cooking demonstration with samples of delicious and health-promoting dishes, along with handouts of easy and affordable recipes participants can prepare at home.
Healthy Basics 4 Class Series at Atkinson Family Practice: 9/8, 9/22, 10/6, 10/20 6-7 PM
This four-class series presents health-promoting dietary strategies that are both
budget-friendly and accessible. Nutrition education components help individuals
to connect diet and disease outcomes while they are simultaneously learning
about easy-to-prepare plant-based recipes. Not only are ingredients and recipes
budget-friendly and accessible, but minimal kitchen tools are required for food preparation.
Participants will take away knowledge and strategies that will help them to realize savings in the
short- and long-term, both in terms of their dollars saved and enhanced quality of life. Each class
